Road Trip to Grande Prairie

Anyone who knows us knows that Terry and I love road trips and that we enjoy those corny “World’s Biggest” statues.

So, we decided to combine the fun by making the five hour trip north to check out the world’s biggest beaver….ha ha.

The sky was a gorgeous shade of cerulean blue and dotted with puffy clouds. There were so many fields of canola too. In short, it was a wonderful day to drive.

As we made the turn north some dark skies appeared but they also made for some beautiful vistas.

We looked for a good place to eat at lunch time and found a good one. We ended up at the Sunrise Diner which had plenty of character and good food too.

We made it to Grande Prairie to discover that there were quite a few world’s biggest (or at least BIG statues to see) including a huge Millennium Sundial. It is over 12m tall (40 feet) and symbolizes the passage of the year 2,000 into the 21st century.

The plaza surrounding the sundial contains ten time capsules created and sealed on the official opening day of Centre 2000. 5 of the 10 are part of the sundial ,4 are dedicated to the community sponsorships, and one celebrates our youth of today. The 1st was opened in 2005 to celebrate our province’s 100 anniversary and the last will be opened in 2050.

Fun fact: Grande Prairie’s Millennium Sundial is one of the largest fully functioning sundials in North America and is the most accurate!

We found the world’s biggest beaver in Beaverlodge and the world’s biggest bee in Falher. As always we have Terry pose in the same position near each statue.

We also had the chance to take a photo of the World’s Biggest Trumpeter Swan but when Mr. GPS helped us get there we only found a kid standing on the former blue base of it….ha ha.
