Shakespeare Freewill Festival
We ended a really fun Canada Day with a drive over to the Shakespeare Festival now showing at Louise McKinney Park. We used to see this fun outdoor festival at Hawrelak Park but it has been closed for a couple years for renovations.
It was a perfect night weather-wise ….which is great since rain had been predicted.
We were actually first in line so we got the best seat (we brought our own…ha ha) near the stage. It is MUCH smaller performance space than the original one but it did the trick. It was also such a nice surprise to run into old friends of ours, Kathleen and Denis, so we sat together and had a super catch up session before the show.
Other than the inebriated audience member (who was eventually asked to leave) and ACT 2 being a bit long it was quite fun!
During the day, we decided to check out a few places around town to see what festivities were going on for Canada Day.
After a wonderful breakfast from Terry we drove out to St.Albert, grabbed a ‘Timmies’, the ‘windmills’ I had purchased, and found a massive party going on at a recreation centre out there. The massive indoor pool, climbing centre, and bouncy castle central were going strong. We went outside after we gave our windmills to two cute children who seemed very happy and thankful.
There were hundreds of people outside and tons of fun activities for children. I loved the ‘sky ride’ in a crane.
There were areas for crafts, face paints, clowns, free stickers, free flags, food, drinks, toys, puppeteers, and even an antique police car.
It was SO hot outside. Phew! We heard one song from the stage before we decided …. off to our air conditioned car to drive downtown East to visit the Riverboat area where one could get a free lunch! All that was left were hotdogs with ketchup so we lined up for them and also received some freshly made potato chips to go with our soda pops.
After Shakespeare in the Park that evening we drove home to have a quiet evening. No outdoor fireworks for us but great memories of a beautiful way to celebrate our country of Canada.
