Off To Elk Island

We know we have to enjoy our road trips before the weather turns. So we decided to head east for about an hour and have a picnic at Elk Island.

I always think its odd that the park isn’t an island and I’ve also never seen elk there…ha ha. But it IS known for its Bison and I hoped we would get lucky and see one or two.

It was quite cool and windy near the lake so we moved inland and found a secluded spot for our ‘fancy’ hotdog lunch. Tile Rummy was also on the ‘menu’ and we enjoyed some good games.

As we took in the park we saw lots of beaver dams. But the best part was that we actually did get to see bison and they were right near the road!

The geese seemed to like their perches.

What is the difference between buffalo and bison you say?

Shoulder Hump: Bison have a large, muscular shoulder hump and a massive head. Buffalo do not have a shoulder hump and have a smoother, cow-like back

Horns: Bison have short, sharp, curved horns. Buffalo have large, wide horns that often curve outward like a handlebar mustache or a tall crescent.

Coat & Beard: Bison have thick, shaggy coats, heavy winter fur, and prominent chin beards. Buffalo have slicker, shorter coats and lack beards.

It was a lovely drive out and so fun to be rewarded with the animal sightings!
